My approach to healthcare advertising is that an ad should be as direct as possible, provide a clear message and a solution – a "call to action." As much as possible, it should help the reader in feeling comfortable about seeking your services. For this reason, when possible I try to include people in the ad – reinforcing a human connection.
There's a moment in developing ads when a poster-size prototype of an ad is brought in and mounted on an easel – and you fall in love with it. It's delicate, beautiful, it will win awards in competitions. The problem with this is that it also has to stand up on a page full of newsprint, and that beautiful, delicate, award-winning ad may well become invisible when it has to compete for attention on a crowded page with a lot of other type.
For this reason, my approach to ad design is less fancy but, I believe, stronger on the page. I've worked with agencies and written and designed ads myself. Most of the ads in my samples I did myself.
